In the background, archival text from Emigration of the Emancipated Negroes to British Guiana details plantation labour conditions and the demands placed on emancipated people working in sugarcane production. The document situates the tin within the material realities of colonial economies, where sugar moves through global systems shaped by control, coercion, and survival. The tin offers intimacy and reassurance, while the archive reveals the labour and violence embedded within what is consumed as everyday sweetness.
