Title: Colonisation Hasn’t Evaporated

Artist: Kazvare Made It

Artwork Description: This work takes the form of an evaporated milk can, reimagined with the label “Colonisation Hasn’t Evaporated.” The familiar domestic object becomes a quiet but insistent reminder that colonial structures have not disappeared, but remain embedded in everyday life, culture, and belief. In the background, archival text from the United Black Men Catechism situates the work historically, spiritually, and politically. Its passages denounce colonisation while also calling for diasporic reclamation, grounding Black identity within a Christian framework. This also exposes the complicated entanglement between Christianity and colonial power, and how that legacy continues to shape belief, language, and cultural memory. The conversation between foreground and background holds the central concern of the work: the persistence of colonial structures within faith, culture, and society, alongside Black communities’ ongoing acts of resistance, reinterpretation, and reclamation. The can’s direct statement sits against the weight of the catechism, revealing how critique and consciousness have always existed within systems of power, not outside them.
