Title: So Many Haters

Artist: Kazvare Made It

Artwork Description: This work takes the form of a Vaseline jar, reimagined with the label “Vaccine: Protection from White Supremacy Jelly.” The familiar domestic object is repurposed as a form of defence, pointing to the persistence of racial ideology within everyday life. The use of “jelly” carries a double meaning, signalling both petroleum jelly and jealousy, reframing white supremacy as rooted not only in power, but in insecurity and projection.

In the background, archival text from J. H. Van Evrie’s White Supremacy and Negro Subordination (1868) exposes the pseudo-scientific language used to construct Black inferiority. In this excerpt, Black people are described as incapable of musical expression, revealing the fragility of so-called “scientific” racism.

Placed within the context of Black British life, this claim collapses. Black artists have fundamentally shaped the sound of Britain, yet remain unevenly recognised within the industries that profit from their work. While this music is often marginalised in public spaces, it is held, valued, and protected within the home, where its significance is fully understood. This directly responds to the archival text’s specific focus on music as a site through which racialised ideas of inferiority are constructed and circulated.

Medium: Printed as giclée prints on 100% cotton rag paper.
