Artwork Description: This work presents an inverted map of Africa, disrupting the conventional orientation that places Europe at the top and revealing how cartography encodes systems of power and hierarchy. The inversion is not only visual but ideological, unsettling the presumed neutrality of maps.Across these zones, text appears in a childlike register: “someone’s been taking my gold,” “someone’s been digging my diamonds.”Drawn from the structure of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the language is familiar, but its meaning is not. Here, the voice is reconfigured. Africa speaks as a collective voice that extends across land, people, and diaspora – articulating histories of intrusion, extraction, and occupation. This narrative form is deliberate. In the original tale, trespass is rendered momentary, almost innocent. Here, that structure is repurposed to expose how histories of violence and theft have been softened, obscured, or normalised. The language remains simple, but its implications are not.
