Title: Mandem

Artist: Kazvare Made It

Artwork Description: This work places a jar of Marmite labelled “Mandem” in the foreground, set against archival text from The Unconscious Hatreds of Men: Hatred of the Poor (1911) by Willard Packard Hatch. The text reflects on how hostility towards the poor becomes normalised, embedding itself into everyday perception.Marmite, often framed as something you either love or hate, becomes a metaphor for how Black boys and men are read. They are frequently misjudged, positioned as difficult, excessive, or undesirable before they are even known. The jar interrupts this. “Mandem” carries familiarity, humour, and belonging, rooted in Black British vernacular and everyday life. It gestures towards spaces where Black boys and men are not reduced or explained, but recognised on their own terms.By placing this against a text about poverty, the work highlights how Black boys and men are repeatedly associated with lack, deficit, and social failure. It asks who is made undesirable, who is denied softness or complexity, and how identity and community continue to form regardless.
